The School of Modern Languages and the Confucius Institute at Newcastle University announce the Annual Conference of the British Association for Chinese Studies (BACS), to be held at Newcastle University from 3 to 5 September, 2014.

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, invites applications for an annual appointment for a full-time, non-tenure-track position in Chinese beginning all 2014.


Position: Associate Professorship (or Professorship) in the Economy of China

Applications are invited for appointment to a permanent Associate Professorship in the Economy of China, to be held in the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies (SIAS) of the University of Oxford, a Non-Tutorial Fellowship at Lady Margaret Hall, with effect from 1 September 2014.

SOAS Positions: Post-doc and PhD studentship on Leverhulme project Sounding Islam in China

SOAS announces two new full-time posts to work on the inter-disciplinary project 'Sounding Islam in China' which is hosted by the Department of Music at SOAS, University of London, and will run from Sept 2014-Sept 2017.

The project aims to provide new, ethnographically grounded research into the changing nature of Islamic belief and practice in contemporary China. The approach indicates a fieldwork-based approach to sound, experience and meaning, seeking to move beyond the habitual academic focus on text-based and visual narratives. The project will focus on sounded religious practices, including the call to prayer, Qur’anic recitation, prayers, sermons, life-cycle and calendrical rituals, and other forms of religious expressive culture, encompassing ‘live’ practices and the mediated transmission of religious sounds and ideologies.
